2023 Matt Marks Impact Fund Recipients

Announcing the Recipients of Support from the 2023 Matt Marks Impact Fund!

Alarm Will Sound is excited to announce Brittany J. Green and Nnux (Ana E. López) as this year’s recipients of Matt Marks Impact Fund support! Green and López will collaborate with Alarm Will Sound during the 2023-2024 season to develop and premiere ambitious new works that explore themes of power and censorship, myth and science. Their projects were selected from over one hundred applications by a committee of AWS members and Ashleigh Gordon, Artistic/Executive Director, co-founder, and violist of Castle of our Skins.

In Green’s Glitch, the musicians of Alarm Will Sound will choose to follow, ignore or influence material dictated to them, in real-time, by a computer program, blurring the lines between consent, control, and coercion and exploring ways technology and our intersecting identities inform and mediate one another. Green will perform narration with Alarm Will Sound.

Nnux will create a narrative work that juxtaposes various creation myths with scientific knowledge of planet and star formation. She will link these cosmic concepts of cyclic transformations, creation, destruction and reconstruction to the physical violence that is routinely perpetrated against women, especially in her home country of Mexico. As a narrator and singer, Nnux will perform with Alarm Will Sound in this piece.

Alan Pierson, Alarm Will Sound Artistic Director, says, “Through the Matt Marks Impact Fund over these past 5 years, we’ve gotten not only to know and work with and support extraordinary artists, but also to help bring into the world so much meaningful and important new art. I’m excited by the ideas that Green and López are grappling with in their projects and so looking forward to embarking on this process with them both.”

Previous Matt Marks Impact Fund recipients include Alyssa Pyper, Alison Loggins-Hull and Toshi Reagon, Rohan Chander, Caroline Louise Miller, and Damon Davis. The works created by the recipients have been performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Washington University on St. Louis, and the Eastman School of Music. In the 2023-2024 season, Alarm Will Sound will perform Pyper’s Cradle at the University of California Los Angeles’s CAP and an excerpt from Davis’s Ligeia Mare at Carnegie Hall.
